The legendary RB2011 product line has offered affordable, flexible, and reliable network connectivity for over a decade. In fact, it was our first router with SFP. It’s finally time for an upgrade. But don’t worry: we’ve kept and improved all the core features and functionality of the RB2011. Even the red color scheme and attractive price!
There are three main reasons to choose the L009: better performance, more features, and interesting quality of life improvements. Let's start with the raw performance and efficiency improvements.
The L009 has a powerful dual-core ARM processor. This provides significant improvements when it comes to routing and filtering, complex firewall rules, IPsec hardware encryption, and various advanced RouterOS features. The ARM processor architecture offers significant advantages over older MIPS-based devices. This allows you to use all the latest features of the Linux kernel or implement your own container projects. The modern ARM processor and full-size USB port are a great combination for running custom container projects. For example, you can run the Pi-hole ad blocker on this router. Or you can use the USB port to connect your desired LTE modem. Here, only your imagination is the limit.
The L009 is up to 4x faster than the RB2011 in most scenarios and configurations, from simple fast routing to complex bridge filters. And the L009's IPsec hardware encryption ensures lower CPU usage without any noticeable performance loss compared to a conventional driver. You can expect around 60-90 Mbps throughput with a 1400 byte packet size.
All ports are now Gigabit Ethernet ports. The first port has PoE input. You can use it instead of the DC connector to power the device. And the last port has PoE output* - to power other devices. Another useful addition is the SFP slot, which supports both Gigabit and 2.5 Gigabit connections. We tested various MikroTik SFP modules and cables that support higher speeds - the 2.5G option makes the system administrator's job much easier. In addition, there is a console port for quick, direct configuration!
All this performance is supported by a fast Marvell Peridot Switchchip, which provides an impressive 2.5 Gigabit full-duplex connection to the CPU and all ports except Ether1. The first port has its own dedicated Gigabit full-duplex line to the CPU. This means - endless configurations without any bottlenecks!
The new box is a wonderful innovation in itself. It’s the same form factor you’ve seen with our highly-regarded RB5009 units. It has some incredibly useful features. First, the box acts as a giant heat sink, keeping your systems from overheating. But here’s the exciting part: it comes with everything you need to install up to four of these routers into a single 1U rackmount space.
At MikroTik, we are the world champions of server room tetris. Here is our latest tip for the most efficient use of your server room: take the RB5009 with PoE out ports and install it with seven L009 routers in just two 1U rackmount locations. You will become a living legend among system administrators, setting a new example of efficient space management and simple, reliable power. This RM version of the L009 is almost indistinguishable from the IN version - except for the 2.4 GHz wireless connection. It comes with all the necessary mounting accessories and allows you to further reduce costs.
The RB2011 will always be a networking legend, but it's time to take it to the next level. And the L009 product line is the perfect upgrade that will help you save time, money, and server room space like never before!
