Nikon Z7II

Improved processing, greater versatility, yet familiar design -Nikon Z7IITaking everything that was great about the original camera and expanding its capabilities even further, the Z 7II features a high-resolution 45.7MP FX-format BSI CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 image processors, making it a clear choice for image creators with a penchant for detail.

The sensor design eliminates the optical low-pass filter to capture more detail, and the sensor maintains a native sensitivity range of up to ISO 64 for capturing rich, vibrant images. The updated processing also delivers increased speed, including a 10fps continuous shooting speed and a larger buffer for working with moving subjects. UHD 4K 60p video recording is also supported, with the option to record externally in 10-bit, using N-Log or HLG (HDR) modes. The sensor also houses a 493-point phase-detection AF system, which now supports 'Eye-Detect AF' in wide-area AF modes and when shooting movies, and allows focusing in low light down to -4.5 EV. In addition, 5-axis body vibration reduction helps reduce camera shake with any lens attached.

With its balanced image quality, the Z 7II retains the same overall physical design, but has been updated with a new dual-slot interface that accepts one CFexpress Type B card and one SD UHS-II card for more storage flexibility. A high-resolution 3.6 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and rear 3.2-inch 2.1 million-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD provide versatility for composing and playing back images, while SnapBridge wireless connectivity allows for remote camera control, image sharing with a mobile device, and even over-the-air firmware updates.

Firmware version 1.10 enables UHD 4K recording at 60p and 50p frame rates, enables raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist external recorders, and improves eye detection performance in Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF modes.

Second generation Z

Building on its initial efforts, Nikon has refined the Z 7 platform to offer greater speed, faster processing, and greater versatility, without losing the beloved features of the original camera.

Dual EXPEED 6 image processors deliver increased buffer performance, a faster 10 fps continuous shooting speed, and noticeably shorter viewfinder blackout time.

The updated autofocus mode now features human and animal eye and face detection for wide-area AF, both in stills and video recording.

It is now possible to take time-lapse photos for up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without using an external remote control.

Two memory card slots provide more flexible file storage options; one CFexpress Type B and one SD UHS-II slot allow for redundant, segregated, and repeat storage options.

The USB Type-C port allows for in-camera charging or continuous power supply for charging on the go or for extended shooting.

The direction of rotation of the lens focus ring can be changed according to your knowledge.

Support for HDR (HLG) mode when recording externally enables immediate playback of HDR-capable video files. N-Log mode can also be used for greater control after shooting and during editing.

An optional ProRes RAW upgrade is available, allowing the camera to output ProRes RAW footage to a compatible Atom external recorder. This upgrade provides more color grading flexibility using the ProRes codec and the ability to output uncompressed 12-bit raw footage via HDMI. This upgrade will be available in early 2021.

SnapBridge wireless connectivity can be used to update camera software instead of relying on a memory card-based update system.

Creative shooting modes have been updated with multiple exposure, 20 different Picture Controls, and in-camera Timelapse recording. There's also a 'Focus Shift' mode for recording up to 300 consecutive shots while shifting the focus position between exposures to allow for focus stacking applications.

Compatible with the optional MB-N11 power battery pack, which provides additional battery life and improved control.

45.7MP FX-format BSI CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 processors

The 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor is used for high-resolution photography, impressive low-light performance, and fast scan speeds that are useful for continuous shooting, movie shooting, and time-lapse recording. The back-illuminated sensor design results in noticeably cleaner high-sensitivity output and reduced noise at high ISO values (up to a native ISO 25600), as well as sharp and smooth quality at a sensitivity of just ISO 64. The sensor design also eliminates the use of a conventional optical low-pass filter to maximize the sharpness and clarity of the sensor. The sensor benefits from two EXPEED 6 image processors that deliver high-speed performance throughout the camera system, including the ability to shoot continuously at 10 frames per second for up to 50 consecutive frames.

UHD 4K video recording

Using the sensor and processor capabilities beyond just stills, the Z 7II is more than a capable multimedia camera. UHD 4K video recording at up to 60p is possible, and Full HD 1080p video recording at up to 120p is also supported for slow-motion playback. Video files can be recorded to the camera's built-in memory cards or as uncompressed files to an optional external recorder via the HDMI output. The Z 7II is equipped with advanced imaging features, including N-Log gamma for capturing flat-looking footage that maximizes dynamic range, and HLG (HDR) for recording HDR-ready footage. Other additions include the ability to output high-quality 10-bit data via HDMI and electronic VR for smooth handheld shooting. Focus Peaking can be used for manual focus control, and there is also a Zebra Stripes option to help detect overexposed areas of the frame. Audio recording can be done using the built-in stereo microphone or an optional external microphone can be connected via the 3.5mm stereo jack for better quality control, and live monitoring is possible via the headphone jack. Software version 1.10 enables UHD 4K recording at 60p and 50p frame rates and enables raw output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist external recorders, as well as improving eye detection performance in Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF modes.

493-point phase-detection AF system

An array of 493 phase-detection autofocus points is located on the sensor, covering 90% of the image area vertically and horizontally. This ensures fast and accurate focusing for both stills and movies, and the wide coverage area allows subject tracking right to the edges of the frame. Hybrid AF is available for movies, which automatically switches between phase and contrast detection systems for smooth focusing during movie recording. The latest NIKKOR Z lenses are also optimized for quiet operation.

Vibration reduction

In-body 5-axis sensor-shift vibration reduction compensates for up to 5 stops of camera shake, regardless of the Z-mount lens used. This system also works with compatible F-mount lenses when using the optional FTZ adapter, which uses 3-axis stabilization.

Housing construction

The large 3.2-inch 2.1 million-dot LCD screen provides bright, clear and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen features a tilting design for comfortable viewing from both high and low angles, and is touch-sensitive for more intuitive operation, navigation and settings.

There's a 3.6m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder for comfortable eye-level viewing. It has a high 0.80x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics for bright, clear images. The viewfinder is also coated with a fluorine coating for easy cleaning.

The Z 7II's top panel features a dot-matrix OLED display. This low-power display provides quick access to important camera settings.

Configured with one CFexpress B/XQD type memory card slot and one UHS-II SD card slot, it offers flexible file storage options - redundant, overflow, or partitioned storage methods are possible.

The rugged magnesium alloy body is dust and weather resistant for comfortable operation in harsh climates and adverse conditions.

The ergonomic grip and overall shape are designed for extended use, further enhanced by the non-slip material and control lever for smooth adjustment of settings and focus point selection.

SnapBridge connectivity is built in for seamless low-resolution image transfer, as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi allow communication between the camera and smart device, and the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display the live view image from the camera for remote work. SnapBridge can also be used as an easier way to update the camera's software.
