The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits when working in available light and allows for better control over depth of field when working with selective focus effects. One Super ED element and one Extra-low Dispersion element greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for greater clarity and color rendition. Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions for sharp images and precise rendering. The rounded nine-blade diaphragm provides a pleasant out-of-focus quality, which is useful when using shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. Autofocus The stepping motor ensures fast and quiet autofocus operation, which is perfect for both stills and video recording. An internal focus design is used, where only the inner lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and promote faster focusing speeds. The minimum focusing distance of 7.5 inches is useful when working with subjects up close. Focused breathing was suppressed to facilitate the use of video and to maintain a consistent field of view when changing focus. Physical design An impressively compact and lightweight design for a standard f/2.8 zoom, this lens is just 4.8 inches long retracted and weighs 30% less than the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens. By default, the programmable control ring is set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation. A specialized electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism provides greater stability in exposure control, which is particularly useful when working with high continuous shooting speeds. The dust and moisture resistant lens body is useful for using the lens in adverse conditions. The front of the lens also features an antifouling coating that resists smudges, fingerprints and dirt and is easy to clean.
