Optical design The combination of two Super ED and six ED glass elements effectively eliminates chromatic aberration and color fringing throughout the zoom range for remarkable clarity and color accuracy. ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections and flare for improved contrast and clarity in bright and backlit conditions. Nano Crystal Coat controls incident light from the diagonal, while ARNEO Coat controls incident light from the vertical.

Autofocus and vibration reduction The multi-focus system features two separate AF drive units that are synchronized to deliver extremely fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors to deliver impressively smooth and quiet autofocus, perfect for both stills and video recording. It is also possible to override manual focus at all times and use an inner focus design, where only the inner lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and promote faster focusing speeds. The minimum focusing distance of 2.5 inches and maximum magnification of 0.38x are useful for working with subjects up close. Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps reduce camera shake by approximately 5.5 stops for better handheld shooting in low light.

Management and design A short zoom rotation of just 80° allows you to quickly switch between 100mm and 400mm positions. The updated zoom design prevents lens slippage regardless of whether the lens is pointed straight up or down, without adjusting torque or tension settings. By default, the programmable control ring is set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation. The built-in OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures directly on the lens in both bright and dark situations. Two assignable L.Fn buttons work in conjunction with the camera's Fn buttons to quickly change exposure settings and other functions. A dust- and moisture-resistant lens body and front fluorine coating help the lens withstand harsh conditions. Inner Balance technology helps maintain a constant center of gravity when changing zoom positions and provides greater stability when tracking moving subjects using a gimbal head. The rotating tripod collar ensures mounting stability when shooting on a monopod or tripod. Compatible with the optional Z-Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2x to further extend the reach of this lens.
