How to achieve perfect results? Highlight the details that make a significant difference in your work. The latest version of this renowned lens is designed to achieve better results, so you can stay ahead of your competition.
Improved AF tracking and exposure control, as well as VR SPORT mode, enable exceptional results when shooting in bursts. An all-new optical design ensures impeccable quality throughout the frame. In addition, Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat effectively reduces ghosting and flare. The lens construction is lightweight and robust, thanks to the use of a glass element made from fluorite.
Whether you’re shooting sports, action, news or reportage, this FX-format lens can help you reach new heights. The 70-200mm focal length range (105-300mm when used with a Nikon DX-format SLR) is perfect for any situation. The fast f/2.8 aperture enables exceptional low-light performance and consistent exposure throughout the zoom range. The closest focusing distance is now just 1.1m, and the maximum reproduction ratio has been increased from 0.11x to 0.21x. Photographers working with Nikon’s high-resolution image sensors and fast-shooting DSLRs will be ready for anything.
Don’t miss a single subject’s movement while maintaining sharpness. Nikon’s VR system reduces the effects of camera shake and lets you shoot at shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than without VR.¹ Designed to reduce blur caused by camera shake, VR now activates as soon as you press the shutter-release button halfway. It’s also quiet. VR mode in SPORT mode provides a more stable view through the viewfinder when shooting fast-moving action or unpredictable subjects. In this mode, continuous shooting frame rates and shutter-release lag remain virtually the same as when VR is off. This lens even recognizes when a tripod is used and adjusts accordingly in both Normal and SPORT VR modes.
Designed for use with Nikon’s fast professional DSLR cameras, this lens responds quickly and precisely to changes in autofocus. You can now accurately track fast-moving subjects – even if they move unpredictably, at irregular speeds or are rapidly approaching the camera. And improved AF tracking isn’t the only improvement. For high-speed continuous shooting, an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism works in conjunction with the camera shutter, ensuring automatic exposure control and consistent frame spacing. The diaphragm element mechanism with a drive mechanism is built into the lens barrel, allowing for smooth and consistent control even during high-speed continuous shooting. In addition, Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures exceptionally fast and extremely quiet autofocus with smooth manual override.
This lens delivers exceptional full-frame sharpness and contrast. Compared to the previous model, this version of the lens delivers improved full-frame quality while reducing light attenuation. The new optical design effectively suppresses chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration, and controls overall distortion at any zoom setting. The design includes six ED glass elements, a fluorite lens element, and a High Refractive Index (HRI) element. In addition, a Nano Crystal Coat reduces ghosting and flare for clearer images. The use of fluorite glass in the design has not compromised image quality in any way while reducing the weight of this lens body.
When you’re working under pressure, details can make all the difference. With configurable buttons on the lens barrel – a feature inherited from professional NIKKOR telephoto lenses – it’s easier to change functions with your thumb when the lens is stabilized. Compared to the previous model of this lens, the zoom and focus rings have been repositioned for better grip: the zoom ring has now been moved to the front of the barrel, right under your hand, making it easier to maintain a stable body position when zooming. A ridged rubber coating above the zoom ring also helps ensure a firm grip, making it easier to zoom in and out intuitively.
Every moving part of the lens barrel is designed to withstand the rigors of professional use, and is well-sealed to keep out dust and water droplets. This renowned lens has also never been lighter, thanks to its barrel made from a new magnesium alloy, HRI and fluorite elements. The lens is coated with Nikon’s fluorine coat, which is virtually water-resistant, dust-resistant and dirt-resistant, ensuring image quality remains unimpaired. This coating is applied to the protective glass on the front and rear lens elements. It also makes it easier to clean the glass without damaging the surface. Ball bearings in the tripod collar ring allow for smooth switching between horizontal and vertical shooting positions.
