The cards are based on drawings by Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall from the History of the Native American Tribes. The official beginning of this card collection was begun by the author John Calhoun and continued when James Barbour became a general in 1825. During this time, many Native American tribes sent their leaders to Washington, D.C., where business transactions were conducted with the War Department. Colonel Thomas L. McKenney began the cards because it was believed that the Native American race was soon to disappear and that these portraits would be of interest to future generations. Many of the portraits were painted by Charles Bird King as early as 1821. Additional portraits were painted by John Otto Lewis, SM Charles, G. Cooke, A. Ford, Shaw, and JM Stanley.
