True to the core concept of the Contemporary line, the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary was designed to strike the right balance between performance and portability, so this large-aperture standard zoom delivers exceptional image quality that rivals the Art line lenses, while remaining lightweight enough for everyday use. Based on the latest technology, the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary features an advanced optical design that includes three aspherical, two FLD, and two SLD elements. Despite using fewer elements than the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art, the design allows for meticulous correction of axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma aberration, which cannot be corrected in-camera, allowing users to create an image that is equally sharp from the center to the edges of the frame. Using a Super Multi-Layer Coating and Nano Porous Coating design that prevents ghosting, flare is well controlled, ensuring high-contrast results in backlit conditions. The front of the lens also features a water and oil-repellent coating.

The new lens features a simpler dust- and splash-resistant structure and smaller switches to match the Contemporary line's design concept of combining performance and portability. This makes it the smallest and lightest lens in its class*.
The new lens features only one lightweight focusing element, making the AF block small. This, combined with a quiet and fast motor, ensures responsive and near-silent autofocus.
