Diffractive optics (DO)

The EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM features a diffractive optical (DO) element, which has reduced the physical size of the lens while maintaining image quality. The DO element combines the properties of fluorite and UD elements into a single glass. The result is high contrast and sharpness, as well as control of color distortion.
Image stabilizer

The EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens features a three-stop Image Stabilizer (IS), making it ideal for handheld shooting. Shutter speeds up to three stops slower can be used without increasing blurring. Sharp movement in any direction is automatically judged as panning, and the Image Stabilizer is turned off.
Ultrasonic focusing

A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly and almost silently. The excellent rotary adjustment rings ensure that the focus point is reached precisely without overexposure.
Attractive background blur

The nearly circular diaphragm, controlled electromagnetically, makes the out-of-focus area softer, smoother, and in-focus subjects stand out against a blurred background.
Integrated into the EOS system

The lens' AF drive design is specifically tailored to suit the latest EOS series and to make the most of the lens' speed. The lens ensures optimal flash metering by transmitting distance information to the E-TTL II flash system of a compatible EOS camera.
