The chess pieces are weighted and feature a 8.9 cm high king. Carefully selected wood veneers, traditional design and exceptional craftsmanship using the art of marquetry bring this wooden chess collection to life. Staunton chess pieces - the ones we know and love, the ones we simply think of as chess pieces. These classic chess pieces are named after Howard Staunton, who was considered one of the world's greatest players. The horse, the most complex and distinctive piece in any chess set, is a realistically carved horse's head. Staunton's rider was likely inspired by the sculpture on the east pediment of the Parthenon.
