The Olympic Games were the most glorious religious athletic festival in the ancient world. Every 4 years, all the Greek city-states would put aside their conflicts and gather in ancient Olympia, where the best athletes would compete in athletic and combat sports. Running, jumping, wrestling, and of course, the discus throw were some of the sports that would declare an honorable winner. A wreath of olive leaves cut with golden scissors was the prize of eternal glory.
Chess players
Famous sculptors have always been inspired by the Olympic Games. The aim was to emphasize the beauty of the athlete's forms and the greatness of the revered gods. The figure of the king is a copy of the famous statue of Poseidon of Mela (2nd century BC), and the queen is the glorious "Athena Promaxos" (450 BC, Acropolis Museum). The bronze statue of the god Hermes inspired the figure of the bishop, and the knight is part of the marble facade of the Parthenon. The castle is a magnificent reproduction of the Attic young Aristion, who died in battle. Finally, the Lombard is a bronze statue of a discus thrower athlete from the classical period (500 BC).
