B+W Neutral Density filters attenuate light by 1, 2, 3, 6, or 10 stops. This is useful in several situations, usually when taking photos with a long exposure, for example: when photographing flowing water with a Neutral Density filter, it will look 'blended', more alive, more attractive than when photographed without a filter (see photo); when bright lighting does not allow you to reduce the aperture to the desired size, ND filters help; you are photographing with an open aperture, but the lighting is too bright to separate the subject from the background.
