When shooting with a regular RF 85mm lens, bright highlights are blurred, but there is still some detail that is not desirable in delicate portraits.

The DS coating, which produces the DS effect, is applied to two elements in different areas of the lens and helps achieve smoother, more even defocusing. This is particularly evident in areas where light filters through trees behind the subject.

How DS coating works

Canon's DS (Defocus Smoothing) coating creates a soft and unique defocus effect where the initially sharp outlines of an out-of-focus image are further blurred, giving the image a unique softness. Canon achieves this effect by using the same optical elements as the RF 85mm F1.2L USM, and by using vapor deposition technology to control the amount of light entering the lens.

This lens has a fast F1.2 aperture, so it works great in low light - the shots taken with it are incredibly sharp and artistic, the bokeh effect looks attractive and the image quality does not suffer.

The DS coating, which provides the DS effect, is applied to two elements in different areas of the lens and helps achieve smooth and even focusing. However, the coating reduces light transmission to T2.2.
