Optical image stabilizer

To help maintain sharp images, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM incorporates Canon’s Image Stabilizer technology. This technology allows for shutter speeds up to 3.5 stops slower than normal and counteracts the effects of camera shake – a great advantage when shooting in low light or when zooming in from a distance. Panorama Detection automatically deactivates horizontal or vertical stabilisation, helping to convey a sense of speed when shooting moving subjects.  

STM technology

The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM uses Stepping Motor (STM) technology, which delivers smooth and quiet continuous focusing with EOS devices during video recording, and precise autofocus during stills. STM focusing is so quiet that it is not recorded by the camera's microphone, so there will be no unwanted noise in video soundtracks.
