A practical and easy-to-carry telephoto lens

The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM reproduces images with sharpness and clarity throughout the entire aperture range. The nearly circular aperture gives out-of-focus areas more softness and smoothness, and separates in-focus subjects from a blurred background. The lens uses a non-rotating front element for focusing, allowing the use of special filters (such as polarizers and graduated filters).  

Large f/1.8 aperture

The large maximum aperture of f/1.8 allows for handheld shooting in challenging low-light conditions, as well as limiting depth of field and achieving creative effects.  

Compressed perspective when photographing faces

The short focal length of a telephoto lens compresses the perspective slightly, thus softening the extremely sharp facial features and achieving a result that is pleasing to the eye.  

Ultrasonic focusing

A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly and almost silently. The excellent rotary control rings ensure that the focus point is reached precisely without overexposure. In addition, the permanent manual override allows focus to be adjusted without leaving AF mode.  

Super Spectra coating

Super Spectra coating ensures accurate color balance and enhances contrast. It also reduces flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light reflected from the camera sensor.  

Integrates with E-TTL II flash coverage metering function

The lens transmits distance information to a compatible EOS camera's E-TTL II flash system, ensuring optimal flash metering.
