Unlike the latter, gel batteries are maintenance-free. This means that they do not require electrolyte topping up. Gel batteries have a hermetically sealed case and the electrolyte is in the form of a gel, which ensures that it will not leak, so the battery can be kept in any position and is more resistant to shocks. One of the advantages of batteries for use is their service life. Importantly, gel batteries are also more resistant to changing and extreme weather conditions and have low self-discharge. Gel batteries are used e.g. in motorcycles, golf carts and lawn mowers. They are also used in uninterruptible power supplies, photovoltaic installations, alarm systems and electric toys.
