It scares away martens by delivering an electric shock in the engine compartment caused by touching (sliding) plates carrying voltages of approximately 200-300 V/DC (weak current pulses that won't kill martens, but will only scare them away). Its exceptionally low current consumption of <0.005 A and automatic shutdown at <11.5 V/DC will prevent battery discharge if the vehicle is left idle for an extended period.
