Ultra wide angle or standard zoom
The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM provides ultra-wide-angle zoom on film or full-frame digital EOS cameras. On DSLRs with APS-C size sensors, it acts as a standard zoom, providing an angle of view equivalent to a 28-70mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Close focus

The minimum focus distance is just 28 cm across the entire zoom range.

Excellent optical performance

EF17-40mm f/4L USM has 12 lens elements divided into nine groups. The Super Spectra coating provides excellent color balance and reduces ghosting and flare. The lens uses three aspherical elements to ensure perfect image quality throughout the 17-40mm zoom range. Super UD (Extra Low Dispersion) glass prevents color distortion.

Ultrasonic focus
The ring-type ultrasonic motor controls autofocus extremely quickly and almost silently. The fine rotary adjustment rings ensure that the focus point is achieved precisely without overexposure. Also, thanks to continuous manual priority, focus can be adjusted without leaving AF mode.

Non-rotating front element
The front of the lens does not rotate, making it easier to use specialized filters such as polarizing or graduation. The insertable gelatin filter holder is located at the back of the lens.

Smooth background blur
The near-ring aperture gives out-of-focus areas more softness and integrity. Bright objects in the foreground stand out from the smoothly blurred background.
Weatherproof
Extremely dust and moisture resistant, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM lens is ideal for use in harsh environments. The whole structure uses ecological lead-free glass.
