Ultra wide angle or standard zoomThe 'EF 17-40mm f/4L USM' provides an ultra-wide-angle zoom for film or full-frame digital EOS cameras. On DSLRs with APS-C sized sensors, it acts as a standard zoom, providing an angle of view equivalent to a 28-70mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Close focus

The minimum focusing distance is just 28 cm throughout the entire zoom range.

Excellent optical performance

The EF17-40mm f/4L USM has 12 lens elements arranged in nine groups. Super Spectra coating ensures excellent color balance and reduces ghosting and flare. Three aspherical elements are used throughout the 17-40mm zoom range to ensure excellent image quality. Super UD (extra-low dispersion) glass prevents color distortion.

Ultrasonic focusingA ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly and almost silently. The excellent rotary control rings ensure that the focus point is reached precisely without overexposure. In addition, the permanent manual override allows focus to be adjusted without leaving AF mode.

Non-rotating front elementThe front of the lens does not rotate, making it easier to use specialized filters, such as polarizing or graduated filters. A removable gelatin filter holder is located at the back of the lens.

Smooth background blurThe nearly circular aperture gives out-of-focus areas more softness and integrity, making sharp foreground subjects stand out against a smoothly blurred background.Weather resistantThe EF17-40mm f/4L USM is highly resistant to dust and moisture, making it ideal for use in harsh environments.
